Knee Feels Good: 1/2 Mile Workout
Today, my knee felt much better. There was no pain at all and I was very tempted to go out for a run. The weather here in San Diego has been perfect: 50s and partly sunny. But a little voice inside my head told me to wait a few more days. So, instead I went to the gym again; this time for a swim. My swimming technique is quite pitiful. I can barely swim a lap (50 meters) without gasping for air at the end. I've tried different breathing patterns, different speeds for my arm stroke, breathing only out of my mouth, and only out of my nose. Nothing seems to work. So, I alternated swimming 1 lap freestyle and then 1 lap backstoke. My heart rate was pretty elevated throughout so it was probably a good cardio workout. In all, I swam 16 laps for a VERY slow 1/2 mile in about 30 minutes!!! You can probably tell that I'm itching to get back out on the road for a run.

Glad to hear the knee is better. That's so funny about the swimming - I'm totally the same way. I've always thought it would be cool to do a mini-triathalon, but I know I'd never get out of the water!
ReplyDeleteYour running and blogging have inspired me! I haven't run since the kids had their Halloween fun run in October so it's been a while. But after reading about your training I figure it's time I start up again. 3 miles last night and I just finished 6 tonight (nice and slow, all on the treadmill in the basement).
I know exactly how you feel about the triathlon. My cousin keeps asking me to do a sprint triathlon with him, but I worry that I won't finish the swimming part in time or worse they'll have to pull me out of the water!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on starting up the running again! I'm sure you'll be back in running shape in no time. What kind of treadmill do you have? Do you like it? I'm thinking about getting one, but I don't want to invest in a subpar one that will die out too soon.
We got 2 True 500 treadmills from a local Gym Source. We got our first one in 2001 and after Grace started using it too, we got a 2nd one about 1-2 years ago so we could run together and watch tv. They both seem to hold up pretty well, though we just need a service repair on the newer one to fix something minor.
ReplyDeleteIn general, they are on par I think with the home versions of the Life Fitness treadmills that are often in gyms. Good treadmills are kinda pricey though and range from 2k-5k. With kids at home, it's impossible for us to get outside for runs during the day much so we definitely get goood use out of them down in the basement. Plus, our neighborhood is way too hilly!
